Laos has been described as a fairy-tale kingdom with a fascinating history. Once ravaged by war, and having fallen prey to the ambitions of its neighbours and colonisers, today Laos is a peaceful nation, rich in Buddhist traditions and hill tribe culture. Owing to its unique land-locked geographical position, Laos remains one of the region’s less travelled nations. It is surrounded by mountains and bordered to the west by the mighty Mekong River.
It is inhabited by several distinctly different ethnic minorities, each of whom has resisted the influence of the outside world. The towns remain steeped in colonial influences
and architecture, and rich in Buddhist traditions and practices.
